This report on Willson Contreras’ contract negotiations is so bad
Instead of acting like the big market team that they are, the Chicago Cubs act more like the Baltimore Orioles or Oakland A’s when they should be like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox. As a result, they are in the early stages of a very long rebuild.
We saw them trade superstars like Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Craig Kimbrel last season in what was a legit firesale. Now, it sounds like Willson Contreras and Ian Happ (who were both All-Stars a week ago) are going to be out the door too.
In the case of Willson Contreras, he has been an elite player on this team for a long time. He is one of the best catchers in the game and deserves to get a nice contract. He is a free agent at the end of this season. Unfortunately, the small market Cubs are not willing to pay him.
It also sounds like they were never willing to pay him. Jesse Rogers of ESPN put out an article that had some info in there that is horrifying for Cubs fans. He confirms in the article that the Cubs and Contreras have not had meaningful conversations about his contract since 2018.
The Chicago Cubs have handled this Willson Contreras situation very poorly.
That is not good to hear. A huge franchise like the Cubs hasn’t been willing to extend the superstar catcher that has done so much for them. Four years have gone by since they even talked about it and that is just a disgrace. Cubs fans should be outraged.
This is a situation that clearly bothers him as a human being as well. He wanted to be a Chicago Cub for life. It meant so much to him to get extended but the Cubs just don’t want to do it. They are clearly rebuilding so now it is smart to move on from him with the trade deadline looming but he should have been extended a long time ago.
The Cubs better hope that they start winning again soon because this fanbase won’t take a long rebuild well. After everything that has come out about how cheap the Cubs have been, this Willson Contreras news is not at all good. Hopefully, he succeeds with his next team and they treat him well.
