The Chicago Cubs should start taking trade calls for Seiya Suzuki
The Chicago Cubs are having an abysmal season. Going into the year, the expectations were low and they somehow managed to be even worse than that. Right now, they are 35-57. They are 1-9 in their last ten games and 14.5 games out of first place.
It is a shame that the team is this bad after being so good not too long before this. They have a long way to go now before they are good again as they are clearly in a rebuild. Jed Hoyer might not want to use that term but it is just the facts.
As a result of this disaster, the Cubs are sellers at the deadline once again. We hear names on the block like Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, and Kyle Hendricks but it might be time for them to consider trading Seiya Suzuki.
Suzuki has battled some injuries this season but he has been really good when he is out there. He has played in 54 games so far where he has a slash line of .272/.355/.451 for an OPS of .807. It has been a pretty nice start to his Major League career.
The Chicago Cubs might be smart to trade Seiya Suzuki before the deadline.
The Chicago Cubs signed him for five years but they legitimately might be smarter to trade him now while he has a maximum value. They aren’t going to be a good baseball team for most of his contract and he is already showing signs of being injury prone although he looks healthy now.
He is the type of player that the Cubs could get a lot for in a trade. They are going to get a lot from some of their other assets as well but a few teams might give up a whole lot if Seiya Suzuki became available.
The nice thing is that the Cubs can decide to put him on the block and then wait for the right deal to come along. If it doesn’t get done before August 2nd (the MLB trade deadline), they will still have four more years with him under control.
Suzuki may be disappointed with a move like this but they (the Cubs and Suzuki) also might agree that it is for the best. He probably wants to play in the postseason during his prime and that might not come with the Cubs. As a result, trading him might help everyone.
