Chicago Bears: 3 offensive tackles to sign with injury problems mounting
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears could sign offensive tackle Rick Wagner
Lastly, the Bears could look at Rick Wagner. Playing his college ball back in Wisconsin, Wagner was a fifth-round pick in 2013. Chances are, if you played offensive line at Wisconsin, you’ll have a lengthy NFL career. That’s exactly what it’s looked like for Wagner, who has yet to find a team for the 2021 season.
Last year, Wagner played his lone season for the Green Bay Packers, where he started nine games. Prior to Green Bay, Wagner was a starter for three straight years with the Detroit Lions. He began his career with the Baltimore Ravens, starting from his second year on and spending a total of four seasons with them.
Wagner has never made a Pro Bowl, nor has he been considered a top offensive tackle in this league. However, he’s been satisfactory at the very least, and for a long time now.
After signing an $11 million deal for two years with Green Bay last year, he was released in order for the Packers to save $6 million against the cap in 2021. If Chicago signed him for roughly $3 million, he’d be a bargain worth the risk.
If anything, Wagner would come on as a very good backup to either tackles, and just might start a few games with how things are going at the moment.
