The Chicago Cubs should try to get as much pitching depth as possible in the system.

The Chicago Cubs have been very bad at developing pitching during the Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer years. Now that Jed has taken over full time, that needs to change. Even if they have to trade for prospects and develop them from there, something has to change. If they continue down this path of bad pitching development, it will be forever before they are good again. They can’t always rely on free agency or big trades to get it done.

If Boston sent them three pitching prospects in exchange for two months of Anthony Rizzo, it would be a big win for the Cubs. They aren’t winning anything in 2021 so they might as well move forward and try to restock the farm.

Jay Groome is the highest-ranked prospect here. He is currently Boston’s number seven prospect. The lefty could end up being an impact pitcher at the MLB level one day. Noah Song and Chris Murphy are bigger long shots but it would give the Cubs a chance at more players to develop. If one of the three turned out to be something good, the Rizzo trade would be viewed as a win. With his expiring contract, age, and back issue, this would be an ideal return.
