The Chicago Blackhawks might settle for Duncan Keith going in a pure expansion deal.

In the Expansion Draft, you can trade a player to the new team in exchange for them selecting who you want them to select. The Hawks probably wouldn’t mind too much if they selected Brandon Hagel over some of their other players so they could give up Keith to get Seattle to do that. It would be better than losing someone who provides more than what Hagel does on a nightly basis.

Brandon Hagel is a nice young player but his ceiling isn’t extremely high or anything like that. He might make an okay 13th forward on a good team but he isn’t what some Blackhawks fans think he is. If he went to Seattle, he would certainly have a chance to grow his game which is nice for both sides. They would also have to get him signed as he is on an expired RFA deal as well. At 22, Seattle might consider this.

It is going to be interesting to see what players the Blackhawks protect in this draft. Keith, if not traded yet, would need to be one of them unless he agreed to waive his no-move clause for the purpose of expansion selection. Based on the report from Friedman, he would more than likely be cool with being traded to Seattle to help the Hawks in this process.
