Chicago Bears: 5 bold predictions for the roster amidst training camp
By Ryan Heckman
5. Justin Fields convinces Matt Nagy he deserves to start
In recent talks with the media, Matt Nagy has cemented his plan to have Andy Dalton start in Week 1. Unsurprisingly, Justin Fields has supported his coach’s decision. However, that still doesn’t mean Fields isn’t coming for that starting job.
This may be the most bold prediction yet, but I believe that at some point during training camp, Fields is going to convince Nagy he is the better quarterback. He’s probably already convinced every fan out there, without ever taking a professional snap. Still, Nagy needs to be convinced.
Fields is going to do exactly that in training camp. We have already heard about Dalton struggling during OTAs. Meanwhile, Fields has looked phenomenal.
Who is to say Dalton and Fields’ performances aren’t amplified even more so during camp? Most everybody knows Fields is the better quarterback, regardless of whether he’s played in this league yet. Nagy has to continue to support his veteran or he’d look bad. It’s understandable.
However, there is going to be a moment during training camp where Fields does something incredible after already having a string of great practices — and Nagy will no longer be able to deny it.
Is it in Fields’ best interest to start Week 1 against a ferocious Los Angeles Rams defense? Probably not. Is he the better quarterback? Absolutely. We’ll see if Nagy realizes this over the next two months.
