Potential surprise cuts the Chicago Bears could pursue: Bryce Callahan

There is a bit of a theme here, if you haven’t noticed. Bryce Callahan is another player coming off a shortened season due to injury, playing in just 10 games for the Denver Broncos.

After the Broncos signed him away from the Bears in 2019, Callahan went on to miss the entire 2019 season due to a foot injury. Then, last year, suffered yet another foot injury to cause him a shortened year. Now, the Broncos face a decision which could significantly impact their future.

Still on the roster and in the final year of his contract, Callahan would save the Broncos $7.2 million against the cap if he were to be released.

If he did get cut, Callahan’s next contract would be a whole lot cheaper and more of a prove-it type deal. He’s struggled with injuries, historically, but when healthy, Callahan has been one of the best slot cornerbacks in the NFL.

Currently, the Bears don’t have a concrete starter at the slot corner. After parting ways with Buster Skrine, that spot is going to be filled via competition. However, if the Bears somehow reunited with Callahan, he’d likely win that job so long as he’s healthy.
