Potential surprise cuts the Chicago Bears could pursue: Zach Ertz

This would be a total luxury move for the Bears, but it would be hard to pass up an opportunity to sign Zach Ertz. The Philadelphia Eagles could save a whopping $8.5 million by cutting him. After trying to trade Ertz all offseason, he still remains with the team and is one of the bigger cut candidates going into the thick of offseason activities.

We’ve already established the fact that the Bears have two strong receiving tight ends on the roster, but adding Ertz would be very interesting. He’s lined up in the slot at times for Philadelphia, also, and could give the Bears some versatility at the position. Chicago might not have a blocking tight end, but they’d have three excellent receivers to help support Justin Fields in his rookie year.

Although Ertz slowed down a little bit last season, he’s just a year removed from his third straight Pro Bowl nod in 2019. During those three years, Ertz caught 278 passes for 2,903 yards and 22 touchdowns. There’s a chance he’s slowed down a bit, but Ertz is still capable of playing at a high level. He’d certainly add a ton of value to this Bears team.

One last bit about Ertz: He’s friends with Nick Foles, who is still on the Bears roster. It might be a minor part of the equation, but that is still something to keep in mind.
