Chicago Bears deal Khalil Mack in these wild trade scenarios
By Ryan Heckman
It may sound crazy to some, but the Chicago Bears could win big in a Khalil Mack trade.
Why? For starters, the Bears need to have one heck of an offseason if they are to legitimately compete in 2021 and beyond. This is a team that has a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and even some playmakers on offense, but continually falls short at the most important position in football.
Chicago is a quarterback away from being a contender in the NFC, plain and simple. But, to get a quarterback, they have to do a couple of things.
First of all, the Bears need to figure out a way to re-sign Allen Robinson. They need to ensure they have the cap space to do so, plus give him a reason to want to stick around long-term. The franchise tag is an option, but having a motivated and satisfied Robinson is important. Get a quarterback, pay him and he’ll be happy.
Whether or not the Bears get a quarterback through the draft or free agency, or even a trade, remains to be seen. If they go the veteran route, clearing cap space is even more important.
If the Bears opt for the draft, they will have to move up. There’s no way around it. The no. 20 pick is not going to get Chicago a top-four quarterback. It might land them Mac Jones or Kyle Trask, but neither are necessarily franchise-altering quarterbacks.
So, trading Mack and his big contract may be the way to go. Look, the Bears have some great football players left over on the defensive side if they deal Mack. They’ll need another edge rusher, sure. But, the Bears’ biggest problem is scoring points, and a team cannot do that without competent quarterback play.
In some unorthodox deals, these are some intriguing scenarios where the Bears wave goodbye to Mack and ensure they have capital and cash going forward.
