Chicago Bears: 3 early surprises after Week 2
New Chicago Bears OL coach paying dividends
Above, we mentioned how Matt Nagy has recommitted to the run game this season. That’s easy to do when your running game is effective, and the Bears’ running game has been terrific so far this year.
They’re averaging 142 yards per game, good for ninth in the league, and have rushed the ball 60 times which is 11th most in the league. Those numbers blow away the Bears paltry run game from last season when they averaged a mere 91 yards per game.
The line is opening up more holes for David. Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, and Cordarrelle Patterson. However, it is not just the run blocking that has shown dramatic improvement.
The Bears have also been sensational in pass protection through the first two weeks. In their opener against the Lions, the offensive line gave Trubisky the second most time to throw, at 3.06 seconds in the pocket.
Of course, the players must get a lot of the credit for these improvements. However, a lot of the credit must also go to new offensive line coach Juan Castillo. With the exception of Germain Ifedi, the offensive line is the same as last year. Meaning the coach is getting better results out of the same players. Consequently, Castillo must be praised for the job he’s done with this unit so far.
