Chicago Bears: 5 key matchups in opener vs. Detroit Lions
By Ryan Heckman
4. QB Mitchell Trubisky vs. Lions secondary
As mentioned previously, the Lions likely won’t play Okudah a whole lot in his first game as a rookie. So, Trubisky will be attacking a Darius Slay-less secondary, which is a plus — not that he will need an added advantage against Detroit, though.
If you hadn’t already known, Trubisky has had some of his best games against the Lions. In fact, he owns Detroit. It feels weird saying something like that about Trubisky, but he absolutely does own Detroit over the last two seasons. If there’s any team fans should want him starting the season against, it’s the Lions.
In two games versus Detroit last season, Trubisky completed 45 of 61 passes for 511 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception. For those counting at home, that’s also nearly a 74 percent completion rate.
For all of the talk from Trubisky being more focused and wanting to improve his play, you have to believe this is lining up to be the best possible scenario for him to prove he deserved to win this starting gig. He’s healthy. His defense is healthy. He should be ready to show out in a much-needed excellent performance on Sunday.
This is his time to prove the doubters wrong, and Detroit is going to give him that opportunity.
