Gone in a Flash

As of now, the status of starting running back David Montgomery remains in doubt. After suffering a groin injury of his own, it seemed unlikely he would be ready for Week 1 despite reports that he could be ready.

If he’s unable to play or is limited by the injury, one player that will be leaned on heavily is Cordarrelle Patterson.

This preseason, there was a lot of talk about Patterson being used mostly as a running back. Despite him being listed as a wide receiver on the team’s initial depth chart, the fact remains the Bears’ priority is to get the ball in his hands.

When they do, Patterson is an electric playmaker and one of the fastest people in the entire league. Nagy emphasized the importance of his quarterback playing the role of a “point guard” and getting the ball into the hands of his playmakers, and that starts with Flash.

Every time he touches the football he is a threat to turn it into a huge play. As a running back in his career, he’s averaging a whopping 7.6 yards per attempt on 103 carries. From the wide receiver position, his size and speed present mismatches regardless of who the defense uses to defend him. Look for the team to maximize his touches on Sunday, and if they do, Patterson could be the game’s MVP.
