Bulls select F Obi Toppin, Dayton

Karnisovas does have the international touch when it comes to basketball prospects, but I think Toppin will give Bulls fans something to be excited about in the near future as opposed to waiting for a guy to develop. This will make Chicago better sooner and being a better location for free agents in 2021.

One of the older guys slated to go early in the draft, Obi Toppin cemented himself as the best overall collegiate basketball player this past season by winning the Naismith Player of the Year award.

Toppin, who averaged 20 points and 7 boards last year, has explosive leaping ability and a fairly rounded offensive game. What stands out is his 41.7 percent from behind the arc during his time as a Flyer (only on 1.6 attempts per game, to be fair).

He would follow suit with Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. as an excellent passer in the Chicago frontcourt while also being an athletic complement to Zach LaVine.

His rebounding isn’t great and his defense is, well, on par with most of the Bulls but he would add shooting depth off the bench to start and (hopefully) be worked in as a small forward to eventually take over for Otto Porter Jr.

Becoming a starter would depend solely on his perimeter defense improving and improving quickly.

The biggest issue with Toppin is his age, which goes in line with his ceiling. While Toppin has a relatively high floor and could be an impact player off the bench immediately, there is reasonable doubt that he might never grow into a starting role, let alone someone who is capable of being on an all-star team.

My last mock draft had the Bulls taking Deni Avdija, who has insane upside in a position of need but I don’t see anything ridiculously obvious that the Bulls might be missing if they passed on him. I’ve changed my mind after watching more film, and would prefer Toppin or Killian Hayes at this spot.
