Celtics select F/C Precious Achiuwa, MEMPHIS

Besides having the best name in the draft, Precious Achiuwa proved himself to be more than capable of stepping up for a Memphis Tigers team that saw James Wiseman only play three games.

Achiuwa averaged a 15-10 stat line with nearly a steal and two blocks per game during the 2019-2020 season and kept other teams on their toes with his speed and athleticism.

While he entered the collegiate basketball season in the shadow of Wiseman, Achiuwa stepped up when his teammate withdrew from the program which will go a long way for Celtics’ head coach Brad Stevens.

The Celtics pride themselves on finding guys who are a little rougher on the outside and mold them into an integral part of the team. Achiuwa has the potential to start in place of Daniel Theis if he proves his worth off the bench.

Precious can beat other players his size off the bounce but could run into trouble if he catches a ball on the perimeter against an opposing wing. He also doesn’t really have a set place in an offense, as he is shorter at 6-9 for the center spot, but owns a reputable post game.

Achiuwa won’t create for himself or stretch out the defense with his perimeter shot, though he will have the chance to develop a jumper, whether it be on the Celtics bench or in the G-League.

Achiuwa doesn’t have the ceiling of Wiseman but can be a serviceable player, and if he ever starts, I believe he could be similar to Kenneth Faried.
