Wizards select G/F Devin Vassell, Florida State

If there is one thing to appreciate about the 2020 draft class, it’s that it is filled with wings in the mid-to-late lottery range. Devin Vassell from Florida State is the first of that category to go in this draft.

With John Wall poised to be back soon and Bradley Beal likely to be double-teamed after showing how dominant he can be with the ball in his hands, I’m sure both of them would love a young sharpshooting wing, like Vassell, to kick out to.

Vassell stands at 6-6 and can swing between either the two or the three, depending on who he’s paired with and he can shoot the lights out. He’s a typical 3-and-D wing who 41.7 percent of his threes during his two-year stint with the Seminoles.

With a pro comparison like Robert Covington, Vassell will have a decent career ahead of him. His offense is a little “meat and potatoes” (meaning boring), but he should excel at the catch-and-shoot right away.

The Flordia State product is shorter as a wing, to begin with, but is quite long. He rebounds pretty well for his position, runs the break decently, and has a nice looking shot form, though he could stand to get to the free-throw line more.

Hopefully, Vassell will be more assertive in the Wizards offense than Otto Porter was during his stint. This is a safe pick for Washington.
