Chicago Bears: 3 big concerns entering training camp
By Ryan Heckman
3. Foles may not have an edge — and that’s a bad thing
Going off the same argument from the previous concern, not having a preseason would be a killer for Nick Foles. If Chicago has zero preseason games, they might not have a choice but to throw Mitchell Trubisky out there Week 1.
Now, would that be a permanent decision? Of course not. But, if Trubisky struggles and Nagy has to make a change to Foles, when does that change come? Surely, Nagy wouldn’t wait too long to make the decision, right?
I’ve hammered this since the Foles trade went down: He’s a better quarterback than Mitch. Whether or not you agree with that sentiment, I believe deep in my soul that this season will prove it. Trubisky is not an NFL starting quarterback. He isn’t. Never has been.
If Foles doesn’t get enough reps to prove he can win the competition, the Bears will start slow under Mitch. Just like 2019 in Week 1 against the Packers, the Bears will fail to come close to expectations with Trubisky under center. At least with Foles, there’s hope that this guy has been here before. He’s been on the big stage and won. It should be his job.
But, will he have the time to earn it? That is the million dollar question.
