Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft: 7th Round quarterback options
By Ryan Heckman
4. Bryce Perkins, Virginia
From a non-mobile prospect to a very mobile Bryce Perkins out of Virginia — there is a lot to like here. Remember some of those throws by Trubisky, where he gets out of the pocket and runs around a bit, then chucks it for an impressive completion? Perkins excels on those types of plays, similarly.
Funny enough, Perkins is more dangerous outside the pocket as a passer. But, that wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a quarterback like that. He is incredibly dynamic as a rushing threat. In two seasons with the Cavaliers, Perkins ran for 1,692 yards and 20 touchdowns — that’s just his rushing production alone.
When it comes to the passing game, he’s going to have to work very hard on reading the field. It was too easy for him, in college, to stare down one receiver post-snap. If that first option didn’t work out, Perkins would improvise. Instead, as a pro, he has to learn how to go through his progressions.
As a runner, Perkins isn’t as explosive as Lamar Jackson, but at times he looks like he desires to have the same style. He can seem somewhat reckless, but boy is he exciting.
