Chicago Bears: Free agency dominoes which could cause mayhem
By Ryan Heckman
4. The Tom Brady saga
It keeps getting more interesting by the day. For the longest time, it was the Oakland Raiders as one of the more likely destinations for Tom Brady. Then, the Tennessee Titans were tossed around in rumors.
Now, it’s the San Francisco 49ers.
Wait, what?
So, what happens if Brady signs with San Francisco? The 49ers would have to move Jimmy Garoppolo, obviously. But, to what team?
Many have entertained the idea of a Garoppolo-Belichick reunion, which would be quite the story. The problem with Brady and his free agency, though, is that he appears to want to take his time. If Brady waits around a little while and doesn’t sign, the rest of the quarterbacks will find new homes.
What happens if guys like Jameis Winston, Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Tannehill, Philip Rivers, Dak Prescott, among others, all find new homes and Brady is left without a home?
The idea that the Bears end up with someone like Derek Carr largely hinges on Las Vegas signing Brady — or drafting their franchise quarterback in April. But, would the Bears wait that long in order to land Carr?
All of these moves could be made, and the Bears might be left with scraps to compete with Mitchell Trubisky — instead of finding an upgrade in someone like Carr. Heck, I’d even settle for Andy Dalton as a consolation prize.
Here’s another thought. Just like many past Patriots offseason storylines, what if this Brady saga is yet another smokescreen? If Brady comes right back to New England, what happens with Carr in Las Vegas?
The point is this: A lot of what happens in the next few weeks will be affected by Brady’s decision, when it is finally made.
