Chicago Bears: 3 key things to know about John DeFilippo
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears shuffled around their quarterbacks coach position on Wednesday by hiring offensive mind John DeFlippo.
The offseason is off to an intriguing start. Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace has made a couple of decisions regarding the coaching staff, and fans aren’t quite sure how to feel.
Well, actually, everybody has an opinion — just go check social media. However, if we’re being honest, the latest moves should have everyone operating under a “wait and see” approach.
After letting go of offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, Pace brought in veteran coach Juan Castillo. Then, after firing offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, Pace filled that vacancy with former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.
The Castillo hire should be a solid one, although many didn’t believe Hiestand deserved to be let go. The interesting hire, though, was Lazor. I’m not quite sold on him, but then again, he won’t have a lot to do under Matt Nagy, who will still be the one calling plays.
Wednesday, Pace hired John DeFilippo to come in and serve as the team’s quarterbacks coach. In turn, he moved Dave Ragone to passing game coordinator.
DeFilippo has been around the NFL a while and was once a highly-coveted name after serving under Doug Pederson during the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl run. Since then, he’s had a couple of stops, and the Bears should feel lucky to have him.
If you were to pool a group of coaches together whom could help guide Mitchell Trubisky and potentially “fix” him, DeFilippo would certainly be towards the top of the list — and that’s what this move means, in short. The Bears have to fix the quarterback position by any means necessary.
So, what’s DeFilippo’s story? Here are a few things to know about the Bears’ newest coaching addition.
