Chicago Bears: Hiring Bill Lazor was a bad decision for the team

The Chicago Bears have hired their new offensive coordinator, Bill Lazor. Lazor will take over Mark Helfrich’s place on the staff.

The choice of Bill Lazor for the Chicago Bears is disappointing but not surprising. This team is full of disappointing signings over the years. We can now say the most recent disappointment is Bill Lazor.

Seeing Lazor and Bengals offensive coordinator doesn’t sit well with anyone. The Bengals haven’t had a good football team for a few years. During the two seasons, he was there, the offense was below average in almost every category. The two most important ones, points, his Bengals ranked 26th and 17th. They lacked in the yards department too. The Bengals ranked 30th and 31st under Lazor’s leadership.

Lazor spent two seasons in Miami. In 2014, the Dolphins were 14th in points scored. That is the highest he’s had with any football team he’s coached for in the NFL.

The four seasons Lazor has spent as an offensive coordinator, his teams have gone 27-37. At least the Bears have a first-round pick in 2021.

Lazor has been around the NFL for a while. Besides being an offensive coordinator, he has been a quality control coach, offensive assistant, and a quarterback coach. It seems like an impulse hire for the Bears. Almost like Matt Nagy was worried that he’d miss out on hiring someone special if Mike Kafka got promoted by the Chiefs.

Just because the Bears signed a coach that worked with the Bengals doesn’t mean Andy Dalton is coming to Chicago. I wouldn’t expect to see Dalton ever in a Bears’ jersey. There’s no way he would sign to be the backup quarterback.

The same reason why Teddy Bridgewater won’t be a Bear. The success Bridgewater had in New Orleans will land him a starting job. There’s no reason for him to leave to compete for the starting role.

So, I don’t love the hire. I really wanted Pat Shurmur or Kafka to come to Chicago. Shurmur will likely be a Denver Bronco next season. There were rumors Shurmur or Kafka would end up in Chicago. Now we can lay those rumors to bed and know they’re not true.

Next. Bears: Tannehill winning the Super Bowl could be a good thing. dark

As long as Nagy doesn’t call plays, I’m excited. I have belief in this football team and expect greatness out of Nagy and now Lazor. It could just be blind hope, but they could be a playoff team. Lazor wasn’t the best hire but if the team can fix some holes on offense, it could turn out as a great pick.
