Winner #1: RB David Montgomery

The most talked about player coming out of the team’s first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers last week was Bears running back David Montgomery. He had an electrifying effort that turned a lot of heads in Chicago.

Analysts and fans were hyped when the Bears traded up to draft Montgomery in the 2019 NFL Draft. He showed in this game and in practices throughout training camp that he’s a great fit in head coach Matt Nagy’s offense.

Nagy wasn’t able to get former Bears running back Jordan Howard going at any point last season. Howard was a key part of the Bears offense in past seasons, but it was clear he didn’t exactly fit in Nagy’s schemes. Howard was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in March.

Montgomery looks to fill Howard’s old role as the bruising back that can break off big runs as well. He’ll have some competition for that job with running back Mike Davis, who the Bears signed as a free agent this offseason.

However, it seems as if Montgomery has a higher upside than Davis since he’s a rookie who’s a raw talent that will certainly get better. He’s also a talented receiving back.

Bears fans are dreaming about a dynamic duo between Montgomery and speedy back Tarik Cohen, and that may be a reality sooner rather than later.
