2. Expectations For Backups

With Tyler Bray and Chase Daniel expected to be the main backups for Mitchell Trubisky, the Bears quarterback room should be relatively stable all throughout 2019. The advantage of having both Bray and Daniel on the roster is that both have knowledge of the offense that is going to help Trubisky.

Unless it’s a trick play that the Bears offense is going to run, it’s fair to expect Daniel to not get very much playing time in 2019. After starting two games in 2018, Daniel totaled three touchdowns and two interceptions. While his numbers weren’t exactly eye-opening, he was still more than serviceable.

Bray doesn’t seem like he’ll be in uniform on game day. In fact, there’s no guarantee that he even makes the roster. If the Bears do decide to move on from Bray, then the team can save $645,000 dollars in cap space.

Daniel on the other hand also seems like he’s in his final season with the Bears. His contract expires at the end of the 2019 season and he’ll hit free agency in 2020. At that point, the Bears will need to decide whether or not to renew his contract or let him walk in favor of a younger player.

Overall, if Trubisky is healthy in 2019, then there’s not much to expect from the backups. However, should Trubisky get hurt, then the Bears will need to get better play from Daniel as the team is playing a tougher schedule in 2019.
