1. The System

The Chicago Bears went in a direction not many saw them going in when they hired former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to be their new head coach. This brought a whole new element to the team that it really had never seen before.

More from Da Windy City

Nagy was really creative with his offensive play calling in his rookie coaching year. It didn’t really seem like Howard fit his system that well. He didn’t get the level of quality carries that he did before. 2018 was a year of adjustment for him and the writing was on the wall. He had career lows in most statistical categories.

It was also the first season in which Howard didn’t reach 1000 yards. This is coming in a year where the offense was much more well balanced and had more weapons but Tarik Cohen ate into some of his big-play type scenarios.  Howard did have nine touchdowns but he was also used in a lot of north and south type situations. Cohen was more used in east-west type situations.

Howard is going to Philly where he will probably take a good amount of carries and be a part of a good offense. In Chicago, his skill set didn’t fit what coach Nagy wanted as much as some other guys would. Now they will be able to use what they have. They have high hopes for Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis.

If Davis comes in and gives similar production to what Howard gave then he should have a really nice year. They might also expect more out of Tarik Cohen so it will be interesting to see if he can handle that pressure. Nagy has a plan with this and he has given us no reason to believe it won’t work out.
