Chicago Bears: Free agent edge rushers to replace Sam Acho
By Ryan Heckman
Clay Matthews
Out of all of the free agent edge rushers at the moment, Clay Matthews made the most money in 2018. And, out of all of them, Matthews is probably the most-hated by Bears fans.
Still, he would be quite an interesting name for the Bears to bring on board.
Matthews is obviously past his prime playing days, and truly only had a few very good seasons as a pass rusher. Whether or not the Packers choose to bring him back remains to be seen, but if they do not, I wouldn’t put it past Pace to pick up the phone and give him a ring.
Only 3.5 sacks last season, Matthews finished the year with the lowest total over his 10-year career. The 32-year-old Matthews might be past his best days, but still has plenty left in the tank as a complimentary piece, I would think.
Remember what I’ve been saying all along: This front seven is already elite. Matthews won’t have to come in and have the pressure on his back to go out and generate double-digit sacks. No, he can come in and spell the starters while knowing there is still plenty of talent around him, and he’ll still likely get some favorable matchups.
The Bears won’t even come close to the number Matthews made last year, but then again, no team will. He’s made the majority of the money he will make over his NFL career, and at this point, it has to be about winning another championship. How sweet it would be to ultimately win that with a former division rival.
