Chicago Bears: Free agent edge rushers to replace Sam Acho
By Ryan Heckman
Shaquil Barrett and Shane Ray
It wasn’t long ago that we were talking about the Bears potentially trading for one of the Denver Broncos’ backup pass rushers. Back when Chicago had an enormous need at the position and the Broncos had just drafted Bradley Chubb to pair with Von Miller, many thought it would make sense to make a move for either Shane Ray or Shaquil Barrett.
Ultimately, the Bears landed Mack and the rest is history. But, now, the Bears could add either Ray or Barrett via free agency. The Broncos have a plethora of talent at the position, and both of these guys could likely end up elsewhere. If either one of them want a significant role on a team with Super Bowl aspirations, then Chicago is the place to be.
Over his 5-year career, the 26-year-old Barrett has started 15 games while appearing in 61 total. He has amassed 14.0 sacks in those games to go along with seven passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Barrett also has a total of 35 quarterback hits.
Meanwhile, Ray has also tallied 14.0 sacks but in one fewer season — also 15 starts. In four seasons, Ray has appeared in 49 games for the Broncos and compiled 33 quarterback hits.
Either one of these guys, especially due to their youth, would be competent as a third or fourth pass rusher on this Bears defense. They won’t cost as much as the premier free agents out there, and after both have dealt with their share of injuries, might be more of a risk than others. Still, both are options for the Bears.
