Chicago Bears 2019 NFL Draft: Pre-Combine wish list
By Ryan Heckman
Running Back Miles Sanders, Penn State
It may seem weird to be seriously evaluating running backs in reference to the Bears, but the reality is, it is an incredibly important position for this team. In Nagy’s offense, you can see a number of guys getting the ball out of the back field in any game. It isn’t just a one or two-back system.
Whether or not the Bears attempt to trade Jordan Howard, this is the reality of the NFL: Offense are getting smarter. They’re keeping their running backs fresh, for the most part. The ideal “work horse” back isn’t necessarily desirable for most teams, anymore. For this reason, you always take a talented running back if he’s the best player on the board.
In the third or fourth rounds, Penn State running back Miles Sanders could easily end up as the best player on the Bears’ draft board.
Sanders is coming off a season in which he had to take over for a guy by the name of Saquon Barkley. Without blinking, he snatched the reigns and put on a show. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Sanders would be an ideal compliment to Tarik Cohen, or a luxurious third back behind he and Jordan Howard.
In 2018, Sanders ran for 1,274 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games while averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He’s a patient back who knows when to hit a hole, and has that next gear he can reach when in space. Sanders could go anywhere in the second or third rounds, for those wondering.
