Chicago Bears 2019 NFL Draft: Pre-Combine wish list
By Ryan Heckman
Safety Johnathan Abram, Mississippi State
When it comes to the safety position for the Bears, they have a couple of decisions to make. First of all, what do they do with free agent strong safety Adrian Amos? You’d like to believe he stays with the Bears, but if the cost is too high, Amos will be cut loose. The Bears also have to decide on bringing back DeAndre Houston-Carson.
One of the guys Chicago could find in the middle rounds is Johnathan Abram out of Mississippi State. Abram has a motor which can get him in trouble with missed tackles sometimes, but watching him play, you can see why he shows a lot of potential as your typical strong safety.
Abram’s aggressiveness is one of the traits I like most about him, despite some of the missed tackles. He finished 2018 with a whopping nine tackles for loss, more than his previous two seasons combined. Three of those were sacks.
He also defensed five passes, picked off two of them and came up with a forced fumble. Abram plays downhill and would be a great candidate to assist in the run game. Within an organization like the Bears, too, he would receive the coaching and development around him to help him slow down just a tad, in order to be more aware.
You will likely see Abram projected to be taken anywhere from the second to fourth round at the moment.
