Chicago Bears: Pre-NFL Combine mock draft
Max Scharping, OT – Northern Illinois University
The Bears first two picks focused on the defensive side of the ball. Now, they turn their attention to the offensive side for pick number three. Although the Bears offensive line is pretty well established — especially since re-signing Bobby Massie — it never hurts to add depth.
In fact, it’s almost imperative to continually draft quality offensive linemen each year as the unit is frequently hit by the injury bug.
That’s why, with their fifth-round pick, the Bears select local product, Max Scharping, out of Northern Illinois University.
Scharping is an offensive tackle who towers at 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds but hasn’t fully tapped into his power. He is also a player that, while experienced at tackle, probably projects better at guard in the NFL. He’s still somewhat raw in his ability, mainly his footwork. However, the Bears have an absolute wizard of an offensive line coach, so if there is anyone who can tap into a player’s full potential, it’s Harry Hiestand.
If he’s able to do that, he would provide instant depth for the Bears at guard with the possibility of someday growing into a starter. If the Bears could uncover a quality rotational linemen with some positional versatility who could someday blossom into a starter, it would be a home run for Pace.
