Chicago Bears: Did Nagy’s comments seal Cody Parkey’s fate?
The latest comments from the Chicago Bears don’t bode well for Cody Parkey.
For those Chicago Bears fans with an unquenchable thirst to see Cody Parkey placed in a catapult and launched out of Chicago, you probably got some satisfaction out of the latest comments coming from Halas Hall.
Just to recap, Parkey sent the entire fanbase into a deep depression when would have been a game-winning kick hit the upright and crossbar for what felt like the 176th time this season.
Just like that, the season was over. There would be no more football for the Bears. No more opportunities to watch the growth of Mitchell Trubisky. No more Club Dub. No more dreams of a storybook Super Bowl run.
It was simultaneously the most unbelievable, yet completely believable moment for Bears fans. Those who followed this team at all knew an important game would come down to this.
Just days later came an equally unbelievable moment for Bears fans when Parkey inexplicably went on NBC’s Today Show. There was literally no good reason for his appearance; an opinion that was confirmed after his appearance on the show.
As it turns out, it appears the organization wasn’t too thrilled about his appearance either.
Today, during the Bears end of season press conference, Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace spoke with the media to conduct a post-mortem on the season, and look forward to 2019. You can imagine Parkey was a hot button topic and as expected, the pair were asked about it. Most telling about Nagy’s future was Nagy’s comments.
Nagy stressed that all year the locker room talked about a “we thing and not a me thing.” He continued that they win as a team and lose as a team. However, when discussing how he felt about Parkey’s appearance, he stated: “I didn’t necessarily think that was too much of a ‘we’ thing.”
Ouch. Nagy could not have made it any clearer that Parkey’s decision to embark on a sympathy tour and put himself front and center while his teammates struggled to get over a crushing loss, was not consistent with what his team must be about.
Whether Parkey knew he’d ruffle feathers with his appearance and did it anyway is unclear — and at least at this point — seems largely irrelevant. Either way, it’s almost impossible to imagine a scenario where the Bears could bring him back next season. Not after these comments.
This should make every Bears fan happy and perhaps goes a little ways in assuaging the grief from last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Well, that and Alshon Jeffery caking his pants in the most important game of the season for the Eagles.
