Chicago Cubs Rumors: No one knows what the heck is going on with Bryce Harper
By Jason Parini
It seems as if the Bryce Harper Chicago Cubs rumors mill changes directions every day. It’s time to accept that no one knows what’s going on with Harper’s decision.
Just 41 days from now, with the Chicago Cubs rumors mill churning, the baseball world will be ecstatic with the much-anticipated arrival of spring training games. The hot stove will turn to warm weather and the 2019 baseball season will be all but underway.
With the arrival of the 2019 campaign will also bring (possibly) a (new or old) team that Bryce Harper will (maybe) have signed with by the time that pitchers and catchers report.
Maybe he’ll be in Philadelphia chowing down on some cheesesteak. Maybe he’ll be in Chicago smashing on some deep dish with the Cubs or Chicago White Sox. Maybe he’ll be back in Washington, D.C. with the Nationals, uh . . . doing whatever it is that goes on in DC.
Maybe he’ll be on a remote beach in Antigua sipping on a Mai Tai.
Just in the past week, we’ve heard that the New York Yankees are the preferred destination for Harper. Then we heard that the Sox were the front-runner and only team “In” on Harper (whatever the hell that means). Then the Sox and Phillies were prepared to offer 10 years to Harper. Then the White Sox weren’t. Then 12 phones were damaged by angry baseball fans throwing their devices when the next report about Harper’s intentions came through an hour later.
Regardless of what may or may not be true, only one thing is for certain. And that is that the only people who know what is going on in Bryce Harper’s head are Bryce Harper and his agent, Scott Boras.
Even if any of the reports of potential meetings or details are accurate, they could even be pieces of gamesmanship by Boras and company to try to get the most money for himself. I mean his client.
They could also be gamesmanship by teams to try to force other teams to pay more for Harper’s services.
With all of this being said, it’s important to stress that any or all updates of the goings-on in the pursuit of Harper shouldn’t be sneezed at or discredited. Perhaps all of them are accurate. Perhaps the Scott Boras corporation has a minion in his office with a burner account tweeting out what they want front offices to hear or believe.
The Harper sweepstakes could truly be the deciding factor in what makes or breaks a team’s championship contention, so there’s certainly merit to the madness surrounding Harper.
Until Harper signs with a team, no one really knows what’s going on with his decision. Let’s not forget that just a year ago, the most coveted starting pitcher in baseball was unemployed as of March 10. That man, Jake Arrieta, was also represented by Scott Boras.
It’s possible that we may begin March with no decision on Harper yet, just like with Arrieta’s free agency.
Regardless of the situation, we are still witnessing the most talked-about and expensive free agency in the history of the sport. Fans wanted the hot stove and by gosh, they got it.
But as the hot stove continues to cook, maybe it’s a better time than ever to remember that a watched pot never boils.
