Play Number Two: Khalil Mack’s monster sack

For the Bears first six games of the season, Khalil Mack was carrying the load on defense, putting together an MVP-caliber season.

However, an injured ankle forced Mack to sit out the Bears last two games. Mack returned on Sunday, and everybody knew about it by the time it was all said and done.

Mack picked up a pair of sacks in the win, but his second was a thing of pure beauty.

As most teams have begun doing, Mack was double-teamed from the snap. Mack made easy work of his first blocker, blowing by him virtually untouched. Mack then pile-drived his second blocker to the ground, pouncing on Stafford and slamming him to the ground.

Like Robinson, Mack’s absence (amazingly) wasn’t really felt, as the void left by him was filled by other players, as the Bears defense was just as dominant in the two games that Mack left.

However, I think we’d all rather have the Bears defense WITH Mack than without him. Opponents? Not as much. But the Bears defense when Mack is on the field is a force to be reckoned with, whether its Mack making plays himself, or taking on a pair of blockers to free up an opportunity  for someone else to make a play.

It’s a blessing that Mack is healthy, just in time for the Bears to take on the Vikings next week on Sunday night. Mack’s play will almost define the direction that the Bears go in, and if he can play just like he did on Sunday, the Bears won’t be an easy out in the playoffs.

The Khalil Mack MVP campaign re-launched on Sunday, and oh man is it a pleasure to watch. The Return of the Mack wasn’t a disappointment, that is, as long as you aren’t a Detroit Lions fan.
