Chicago Bears: Top five plays from win over Lions
Play Number Four: Trubisky’s six-yard scamper
The emergence of Mitch Trubisky as a whole has been a major factor in the Bears 6-3 record.
While his throwing ability is the most improved part of his game, one can argue that the ability of Trubisky to make plays with his legs has been the biggest factor in his improved play from last season.
Recently, Trubisky has shown more of a willingness to extend plays with his legs. Trubisky’s presence as a dual-threat quarterback has given the Bears something that they haven’t had in quite a long time.
In this play, Trubisky scans the field and finds a hole made by the offensive line. The play might not have been a designed run, but regardless, Trubisky’s quickness on the ground, and his fearlessness were what made this play happen.
In the past, the Bears haven’t had a quarterback with the running ability of Trubisky. The threat of Trubisky to extend plays has done wonders is opening up the rest of the field for the Bears. While Trubisky had just three runs for 18 yards on Sunday, his football intelligence has helped him make good decisions with his legs, whereas last season Trubisky seemed to have made up his mind on throwing or running too early in plays.
While Trubisky will naturally get all of the credit for his plays on the ground, the offensive line clearly deserves some credit. Especially in the absence of Kyle Long, the offensive line has stepped it up big time, allowing just one sack on the day, protecting Trubisky, the Bears franchise quarterback.
Trubisky’s scrambling ability is both productive and entertaining. As the Bears get deeper into the season, and the playoff push nears, it’ll certainly be interesting to see if the Bears draw up more designed runs for Trubisky, who looks up to the task if the time comes.
