Kris Dunn

Am I unapologetically on board the Kris Dunn hype train? Absolutely. In fact, throw me a conductor’s hat and I’ll get behind the wheel — or whatever the heck it is they use to steer those things. The point is, I think Dunn is poised for a breakout season. I have had that feeling for some time.

That feeling grew stronger after listening to him speak at the Bulls Media Day. Listening to him, you could sense his focus and determination. He seems ready to assert himself and take over as the floor general of this team that the organization needs him to be.

The more comfortable Dunn gets, the better he plays. This was the case during his time at Providence College and has been the case during his time in the NBA — albeit a limited sample. Just take a look at the leap he took after a disappointing rookie campaign. While many players experience a “sophomore slump” Dunn flourished.

His points quadrupled from 3.8 to 13.4, his assists nearly tripled from 2.4 to 6.0, and his total rebounds more than doubled from 2.1 to 4.3. That leap occurred even though he missed 30 games and didn’t get a full season on the court with Markkanen and Zach LaVine. Now you add Jabari Parker and Wendell Carter to the mix, and Dunn could enjoy another giant leap forward all the way to the Most Improved Player award.
