Chicago Bears: Handing out individual awards through Week 4
By Ryan Heckman
Defensive MVP: Outside Linebacker Khalil Mack
Every time I bring up Khalil Mack, I have to sort of laugh. First of all, how do the Bears, of all teams, end up pulling off such a blockbuster deal? That is still something I don’t think I’ve fully come to grips with. That kind of thing doesn’t happen to this franchise, but here we are.
Secondly, I laugh because that’s all I can do when watching him play this year. It’s almost comical the kinds of feats he accomplishes on a play-by-play basis. He is virtually impossible to block. He completely destroys one side of the line, leaving room for his fellow defenders to get in on the quarterback as well. He causes a complete train wreck for offensive lines and quarterbacks. There’s really no other way to put it.
So, obviously, if the guy wins the NFL Defensive Player of the Month for September, he’s this team’s Defensive MVP. He’s well on his way to becoming the 2018 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and some have even thrown him in the MVP conversation.
That’s the kind of player we’re talking about, here. To be a defensive player within the MVP talks is downright impressive. It’s unheard of. Mack has been a problem and will continue to be a problem for opposing offenses, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
