Chicago Bears: Position-by-position grades through Week 4
By Ryan Heckman
Wide Receivers, Tight Ends
What a 180 this group has pulled in just one year. Think about it.
Let’s look at some numbers, just to put it in perspective:
- On 125 targets, the Bears have combined for just ONE drop, putting them on pace for four on the season (last year, the Bears combined for 30 total drops).
- So far, the Bears’ receiving percentage is at 72.8 percent, compared to 65.7 last year.
- The Bears have scored on eight passing touchdowns in 2018, compared to 13 all of last season.
- The Bears’ offense ranks as the 13th-best according to PFF.
All of these factoids are in large part due to the outstanding play of the receivers and tight ends. Adding a guy like Trey Burton is starting to pay dividends. We’ve seen him score on two completely different plays. He’s taken a shovel pass in for a score at the goal-line, while also streaking down-field and catching a long one for a score.
Meanwhile, Allen Robinson is becoming a favorite target for Trubisky. Now, the passes aren’t necessarily always on target, nor is Robinson always open. But, he’s starting to become a problem.

Speaking of problem, Taylor Gabriel is emerging as a real problem for defenses. He’s being used as a runner and in the passing attack. He’s become more of the Tyreek Hill type of player in this offense, and Trubisky is starting to target him heavily.
Seriously, defenses are going to have to pick their poison the more the season rolls on. As long as Trubisky comes to play, these weapons are going to wreak havoc.
