Why Chicago Bulls should uphold promise to Chandler Hutchison
By Ryan Heckman
A do-it-all wing is a recipe for bench success
If you take a quick look at the Bulls bench at the moment, there is not a whole lot to like. In fact, there is only one player whom fans can get especially excited about, and that’s Bobby Portis. The big man and former Arkansas standout is a staple in the Bulls’ future success and can be the focal point of that second unit for years to come.
Aside from Portis, the Bulls don’t have much there. Hutchison would fit right in as a guy to come off the bench with Portis and provide the Bulls with a nice lift. Hutchison comes into the league as one of the more mature prospects at 22 years old and the four years of experience at the college level makes him a relatively safe pick.
While Hutchison doesn’t have the “superstar” label tossed around his name, that is perfectly fine. At pick no. 22, the Bulls will be looking for someone who can come in and contribute at a high level off the bench. If, somehow, they were to find a future starter, that’s a bonus.
At 6-foot-7, Hutchison possesses ideal size at the wing. He has scored consistently for the past three years at Boise State, shooting no worse than 47.5 percent from the field. Last year, he averaged a career-best 20.0 points per game and shot just under 36 percent from deep.
Even at the three spot, Hutchison proved to be a viable facilitator last year, posting 3.5 assists per contest. He also grabbed nearly eight rebounds per game, showing his well-roundedness. Hutchison is known to be one of the hardest-working players in this class. Combine that with his age — which I think can be a good thing — and you’ve got yourself a very, very solid pick.
Must Read: Why Bulls could disappoint in the draft
Hutchison projects well at the NBA-level on both ends, and a lot has to do with his effort. He doesn’t give up on a play. He attacks. He plays tough defense. What’s not to like when looking at a future bench stud?
