Could Chicago Bears quarterback really rush for over 500 yards in 2018? If you ask one of his teammates, that number should be even higher.

More from Da Windy City

Mitchell Trubisky and the 2018 Chicago Bears offense will be much, much different than they were just a year ago. At this point, everyone knows the major reasons why. First and foremost, head coach Matt Nagy was brought in as a younger, more intuitive offensive mind, to help Trubisky develop and take his game to the next level.

General manager Ryan Pace took it upon himself to make this offseason all about his young quarterback. He went out and surrounded Trubisky with tons of talent. He brought in weapons in the passing game like Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel and Trey Burton. Pace upgraded the offensive line and receiver position via the draft, by selecting James Daniels and Anthony Miller. He even addressed the kicker position, signing Cody Parkey.

We know about all the additions, but one aspect of the offense that seems to have been put aside is the fact that Trubisky is an athletic, mobile quarterback who can take off and run.

So, how has Nagy structured the offense so that Trubisky’s athleticism can be used effectively? If you ask offensive tackle Bobby Massie, things are looking quite positive for that aspect of the offense. Massie recently told the Chicago Sun Times just how good he thinks his quarterback could be on the ground in 2018:

"“I can see him getting 40 to 60 yards per game. You’re definitely going to see his athleticism.”"

Just in case you aren’t quick with math, that’s 640 rushing yards on the low end — 960 yards on the high end. Maybe we will find some middle ground and call it 800 rush yards — sound good?

To put it in perspective, Trubisky rushed for 248 yards in 12 games last season. That would put him on a 16-game pace of about 331 yards on the ground. Trubisky would essentially more than double his output from his rookie campaign in 2018, if Massie’s assessment were to come to fruition.

I don’t know about you, but I could absolutely live with that.

RPO-style plays are going to be prevalent in the new offense, giving Trubisky a lot of freedom to make the right call in certain spots. He showed the ability to make those decisions fairly well as a rookie. Chances are, the offense is going to depend a lot on Trubisky’s intellect. If he makes the right decisions on the majority of downs, the Bears could certainly light up the scoreboard. They have the weapons, now it’s just up to execution.
