Chicago Bears: 3 ways the offense will change in 2018
3. They’ll exploit matchups everywhere
The best thing about the job Ryan Pace did with this new receiving corps of Trubisky’s wasn’t that he necessarily brought in world-beaters at wide receiver.
As good as Allen Robinson is, it’s not like he’s Julio Jones or Antonio Brown. Taylor Gabriel isn’t Tyreek Hill, though he’s pretty fast and explosive in his own right. Trey Burton isn’t Zach Ertz. Anthony Miller could be really good and reminds somewhat of Brown, but he hasn’t played an NFL snap yet. So we have yet to see what everyone looks like a Bears uniform.
But what should have Bears fans particularly excited about this group is the sheer number of formations and matchup craziness Nagy has at his disposal with this incredibly versatile group.
Every receiver they currently have (including Kevin White, I guess?) can line up and be effective outside or in the slot.
Burton can line up outside, in the slot or with his hand on the ground at tight end. The Bears even toyed around with moving Shaheen outside a bit last year to give glimpses of red zone looks.
Tarik Cohen can line up and realistically get the ball in space anywhere on the field, as can Gabriel. And when they do, their speed and quickness can drive opponents insane.
With a squad like that, they can move pieces around all over the place to determine coverages and, if they find themselves against man-to-man, get exactly the matchup they want.
Imagine Nagy forcing a shorter corner on Shaheen in the red zone, or getting a linebacker on Cohen in space. Or making a smaller slot corner deal with Robinson, Miller or White inside.
Next: Matt Nagy is changing Bears culture
Thanks to Pace, Nagy has an offense with more potential than even that of the Brandon Marshall/Alshon Jeffery/Martellus Bennett/Matt Forte Bears. Having giant receivers that could simply outmuscle or outfight defenders was excellent. Having a team that can beat defenses in just about every way you can think of is even better.
Chicago Bears fans, this should be very fun.
