Chicago Bulls: An early look at 5 free agents to pursue
By Ryan Heckman
Shooting Guard/Small Forward Will Barton, Denver Nuggets
Age: 27
Experience: Six seasons
Type of free agent: Unrestricted
2017 averages: 15.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.0 steal in 33.0 minutes per game
Speaking of help on the wing, Will Barton would be an even better option than the aforementioned Caldwell-Pope. As one of the top sixth men in all of basketball this year, Barton has enjoyed his best season yet as a pro.
Barton averaged a career-high in points, assists and field goal percentage over the course of 2017-2018, helping the Nuggets to a winning record in a highly competitive Western Conference. Not many picked the Nuggets to have the success they had this year, but Barton was a large part of that.
While Barton is seen primarily as what he’s been, a sixth man, I wouldn’t be upset if the Bulls signed him and threw him next to LaVine in the starting lineup. Although, ideally he would be a better fit off the bench if Chicago can solidify that other wing position.
Barton is unrestricted, so the Bulls have just as good of a shot as anybody to sign him. The only question is, how much money will he want and will the Bulls be willing to pay up for someone who is a toss-up to start for them?
