Chicago Bears: Draft Courtland Sutton, let Cameron Meredith walk?
By Ryan Heckman
The case for Sutton
Like I said, I’m a fan of Sutton and have watched him for a while now. The thought of having another big-bodied receiver like Sutton at 6-foot-4 is something I could get used to. Sutton was one of the most consistently productive receivers in college football over the last three years, and thus will likely be a late-first or early-second round pick at this point.
Sutton’s strengths are much related to his size overall. He is a huge target for quarterbacks and, what’s scary, is that his college quarterback, Ben Hicks, wasn’t always the most accurate passer. The fact that Sutton’s production could have been even bigger at SMU is pretty frightening.
In three seasons, Sutton caught 193 passes for 3,193 yards and 31 touchdowns. His freshman year was limited by an injury and medical redshirt. Following that year, though, he remained healthy — that’s a positive when compared to Meredith and even Robinson.
Sutton is a little bigger than Meredith by about 10 pounds, but plays a bit stronger. The downside with Sutton is that he sometimes struggles to break free from coverage, but that could also be an effort thing.
He has great hands and knows how to position his body well so that he has the best chance at making the catch. Sutton also plays with a lot of confidence. He looks the part and brings that competitive attitude each and every down.
There’s no doubt that Trubisky would love having a huge target like Sutton on the field, especially with Robinson garnering attention as well. I feel he would fit well and get a chance to develop quickly under the current coaching staff, especially while playing with such an accurate passer in Trubisky.
