In one of the more interesting reports early this week, the Chicago Bears could benefit from a sudden projected shift in the top of the first round.

Things are just about to heat up, people. The 2018 NFL Draft is 23 days away and the outlook keeps looking brighter for the Chicago Bears. There was a pretty significant nugget of information released Monday by Peter King of Sports Illustrated’s MMQB.

Per King’s column:

"This friend of Cleveland GM John Dorsey believes he’ll go Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen over Sam Darnold with the first overall pick, keep the fourth pick, and take Penn State running back Saquon Barkley."

So, to recap, here’s what the Browns will likely do on day one of the draft:

  • 1st overall: Quarterback Josh Allen, Wyoming
  • 4th overall: Running back Saquon Barkley, Penn State

Not only do we have King’s report, but coupled with that is the latest mock from Mel Kiper Jr. Now, I know Kiper gets a lot of flack — trust me, he knows it too. But, it’s no coincidence that this latest mock comes out the same day King released the latest Browns information.

Per Kiper’s mock 3.0, here is what the top of the order looks like:

  • Cleveland Browns, 1st overall: Quarterback Josh Allen, Wyoming
  • New York Giants, 2nd overall: Quarterback Sam Darnold, USC
  • New York Jets, 3rd overall: Quarterback Josh Rosen, UCLA
  • Cleveland Browns, 4th overall: Running back Saquon Barkley, Penn State
  • Denver Broncos, 5th overall: Quarterback Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma

Oh my, how times have changed. A year ago, you might have heard one, two or three of these quarterbacks headed for the top-10 of the 2018 draft order. Now, we’re seeing four quarterbacks likely to go in the top five picks.

If King and Kiper have something here, then the Bears are in luck. Let’s say, for kicks, that the above mock plays out. Then, you’d have the Indianapolis Colts picking at no. 6. Do they take N.C. State’s edge rusher Bradley Chubb? Let’s assume they take either Chubb or Minkah Fitzpatrick out of Alabama.

Then, at number seven, you have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If the Colts take Fitzpatrick — or pass on both of the above names — then the Bears get quite the gift in their lap with Chubb at no. 8. If the Bucs take Chubb, then that would mean Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson — whom many Bears fans would love to see there — would have to be the pick.

When it’s all said and done, I don’t see a way this won’t benefit the Bears. If anything, this information can only be a good thing for Chicago.

Take a minute and think to yourself what other team needs to move up to draft a quarterback. They’ve been working hard at moving up this offseason and there’s no doubt in my mind that they will move even further up the board.

The Buffalo Bills.

I am 99 percent sure the Bills will move into the top 10 in order to secure a quarterback. At this point, we might have an all-out war for the top passers available.

Let’s not forget that Lamar Jackson’s stock continues to rise as well, and if the quarterback position becomes even more sought after than we originally thought, he could find himself moving up the draft board quickly.

Bears fans, this is all nothing but great news for us. The Bears are going to come away with one heck of a player at no. 8 overall, regardless. Looking at broad rankings, putting aside positions, the Bears will more than likely going to wind up with a top-4 or top-5 player at their eighth overall pick.

That is outstanding.
