Quenton Nelson wants Chicago Bears to select him in first round
By Ryan Heckman
The son of a Chicago Bears legend met with Quenton Nelson recently, who told him where he’d like to end up in this year’s draft.
The Chicago Bears need help at offensive line. Quenton Nelson is the top offensive lineman in the 2018 NFL Draft class. It seems too obvious.
The former Notre Dame guard is looked at widely as a top-3 prospect in this year’s draft. Some have him in their top 10, some in their top five. Regardless, Nelson is as good of a guard coming out of college as we’ve seen in quite some time.
Thursday afternoon, Jarrett Payton, son of Walter Payton, met with Nelson at his pro day. Nelson put it simply: He wants to be in Chicago.
I am sure he’s seen all of the projections by now, and he knows just how good he is. Nelson most certainly believes he could go inside of the top five picks in April, but he wants the Bears to be fortunate enough to grab him at the eighth pick overall.
Because of the inevitable quarterback-heavy top five, Nelson just might get his wish — and he’s not the only one excited about the opportunity to play for the Bears.
Kyle Long retweeted Payton’s photo with the infamous “eyes emoji,” typically meaning something has significantly caught one’s attention.
It’s quite the thought to have a duo of Nelson and Long at the guard position. When healthy, Long is among the league’s best at his spot, making three straight Pro Bowl appearances to start his career.
Nelson’s greatest attribute is his strength. His ability to get leverage and hold his ground in pass blocking makes for an attractive pick. Don’t worry, the guy is ferocious in run blocking as well. Quite frankly, he has many desirable attributes.
Sure, he’s strong. But, Nelson is also impressive athletically. His combine and pro day proved just how quick he can move, making him valuable for all kinds of offenses, but specifically Matt Nagy’s. With a lot of movement and scheming going on in Nagy’s playbook, Nelson’s fit couldn’t be more perfect.
Will the Bears see Nelson fall? It certainly could happen. Look at the major trades happening above them. It’s clear there will likely be three quarterbacks off the board before Chicago picks. There is no doubt Saquon Barkley and Bradley Chubb also disappear before the Bears pick at eight.

It’s not crazy to believe that Nelson, Long and Bears fans everywhere could get their dream scenario up front.
Mitchell Trubisky would be a fan, too.
