Chicago White Sox prospect profile: Alex Call
Continuing our series of previewing the White Sox Top-30 prospects, we look at Alex Call – the Chicago White Sox’s #26 ranked prospect.
The Chicago White Sox farm system isn’t short on outfield talent. Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert and Blake Rutherford all rank in the Top-50 prospects in the MLB, with Jimenez ranked at #5 (MLB Pipeline).
While the top-tier prospects are great, what makes the White Sox farm system so good is its depth. Guys like Alex Call would easily be Top-20 prospects on most teams but are slotted in the low-20s on the White Sox’s list.
Call, a 3rd-round pick in 2016 out of Ball State University, is one of the best athletes in the Chicago White Sox farm system.

As a quick outfielder that can play all three outfield positions, Call’s good arm and plus defense will be his “call”-ing in the MLB.
Call has totaled just four errors in his first two professional seasons, spanning from rookie ball to Low-A Kannapolis.
Call’s work with the bat has been up-and-down in his short pro career. After bursting onto the scene with a .308 batting average in 2016, Call’s average dropped a full .100 to .207 in 2017.
Although injuries limited Call to just 61 games in 2017, Call is going to need to show some serious improvement with the bat in order to make his way through a loaded and competitive White Sox farm system.
With eight outfielders ranked ahead of him on the White Sox Top-30 prospects list, Call could be a trade candidate once the White Sox start to transition out of the rebuild.
Despite his talent and upside, Call likely won’t be able to bypass at least five higher-ranked outfielders all the way to the big leagues. And with the likes of Jimenez and Robert expected to take over the outfield for the Sox in the near future, playing time would be slim for him.

While Call could suddenly break out in 2018 and force into the Chicago White Sox future plans, Call unfortunately likely doesn’t have a place in Chicago long-term.
Look for Call to be mentioned in potential trades, as he would be higher-ranking prospect on just about every other team.
