The Chicago Bears made mistakes by leaving these three players on their original 53-man roster.

On Saturday, the Chicago Bears, along with the rest of the NFL, cut their roster way down to 53 players. Now, the mass cuts around the league is going to create an interesting waiver wire period on Sunday and will undoubtedly change the roster up a bit, but the Bears have put together their first 53-man roster for the 2017 season.

We know who made the cut and we know it can significantly change with a lot of interesting waiver wire candidates available. So, who made it through the worst cut safe but shouldn’t have? Let’s take a look at three players who the Chicago Bears should have easily moved on from.

3. Ben Braunecker, TE

In a surprising move, the Bears kept five tight ends on their original 53-man roster. Zach Miller and Dion Sims are the starters, Adam Shaheen is the rookie second round pick who needs some time to develop and Daniel Brown is an interesting receiving tight end who has shown the ability to make an impact. The Bears have also kept Ben Braunecker and that does not make any sense to me.

Braunecker is a bit tight end who is a decent blocker and has some receiving skills, but he does not really have the upside of anything more than a third tight end. With so many players on the Bears’ roster already at the position, I see no reason to keep Braunecker around.

The Bears offense is going to be centered on Jordan Howard and the rushing attack in 2017. Expect them to line up in a ton of two and three tight end sets this season. That being said, they still don’t need five.

Having Braunecker on the roster is completely unnecessary and I fully expect him to be among the first cuts if the Bears make an addition to the roster on Sunday.
