Chicago Bears Draft Grades 2017: Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky
The Chicago Bears traded up to take quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Check out the draft grade for the selection.
The Chicago Bears pull off the immediate shocker. Instead of staying put at three, Ryan Pace went up and got his guy in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Bears traded the third overall selection, their 2017 third-round pick, 2017 fourth-round pick and 2018 third-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for the second overall selection. At number two, the Bears take North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
All of the mock drafts in the world could not have predicted this. The Bears have shown interest in quarterbacks throughout the process but seemed more interested in Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes and DeShone Kizer. Trubisky was the hot name in recent weeks and the Bears clearly feel like they needed to get their guy.
If we are talking about this pick alone, I don’t hate it. Trubisky was fantastic at North Carolina last season, completing 68 percent of his passes for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. That being said, 2016 was his first and only season as a full-time starter. Trubisky was great last season, but why couldn’t he get on the field before?
Trubisky is a tough kid, accurate passer and can make all the necessary NFL throws. As a quarterback, there is a lot to like here. However, I can not condone giving up so much to trade up one spot. This Bears’ roster has many holes. They need those mid-round selections to build their roster. Giving them up to move up one spot is foolish.
The 49ers obviously had offers on the table for other teams looking to come up. The Chicago Bears obviously thought that those teams were coming up for Trubisky. There is something to be said about coming up to get your guy, but if Trubisky flops, the Bears are in some serious trouble.
I simply cannot give this selection a strong grade.
If Trubisky is as good as the Bears think, this will all be worth it. Finding a true franchise quarterback is the most important part of building a team. That being said, if he flops, they just put this franchise back a number of years.

Those mid-round selections are important. I understand going all in to get your guy, but if this doesn’t work out, the Bears are not going anywhere. Ryan Pace and company just put all of their chips in the middle of the table. We will see how it goes.
