2017 NFL Draft: Why the Chicago Bears will select a QB in Round 1
By the time that the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft is completed, the Chicago Bears will have selected their long-term answer at the quarterback position.
The 2017 NFL Draft is upon us and the Chicago Bears could be on the verge of making a selection on Thursday night that will change the course of their organization.
The Bears’ currently possess the third overall selection in the draft. With the third overall selection, the Bears need to select a player that will define their franchise for years to come. Nothing against the previous first round picks of Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace, wide receiver Kevin White and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, but the Bears need to do something that they haven’t done since the selection of Kyle Long–hit with their first round selection.
The Bears can go in any number of directions with the third overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Bears could address their secondary with the selections of Jamal Adams, Malik Hooker, or Marshon Lattimore. The Bears could address their pass-rushing needs with the selection of Jonathan Adams or Solomon Thomas. Or, the Bears could address their need for a long-term answer at the quarterback position with the selection of Mitchell Trubisky or DeShaun Watson.

A justification could easily be made for any of those first round selections for the Bears. However, there is only one selection that makes sense.
The Bears will draft a quarterback with the third overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. The selected quarterback will be Clemson’s, DeShaun Watson.
There has been evidence provided from Pace to indicate that Watson is the selection for the Bears in the first round. Every time that Pace has talked about the Bears’ No. 3 overall selection, he has stressed the need for the Bears to find the right player. The type of player that can change the dynamic of an organization. In addition, every time Pace has talked about finding the Bears’ long-term quarterback, he has talked about finding a player that can elevate an organization. The description of what Pace is looking for at No. 3 overall and in his long-term quarterback is identical.
Enter Watson.
Watson certainly changes the dynamic of the Bears’ organization. Watson would be the first quarterback that the Bears have drafted in the first round since Rex Grossman. Not to mention, the Bears never had a quarterback that possessed the athleticism that Watson has. In addition, Watson elevated the Clemson football program during his collegiate seasons.
