First Base. 1981-1988. Leon Durham. 15. player. 9. Career Home Runs with Cubs: 138

While he is probably best known for his critical error in the 1984 National League Championship Series, Leon Durham was one of the best power hitters in the history of the Cubs’ franchise. He played for the Cubs from 1981-1988, far and away the most time he spent with any franchise.

Durham actually made his big league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980 but was acquired by the Cubs that next offseason in a trade for Bruce Sutter.

Durham’s best season came with the Cubs in 1982 when he hit .312/.388/.521 with 22 home runs on the season. He was an All-Star for his play that season and also won the National League Silver Slugger for left fielders. Durham was also named an All-Star the next season in 1983.

In 1984, Durham became the Cubs’ everyday first baseman. He hit at least 20 home runs in each of the next four seasons (23 in 1984, 21 in 1985, 20 in 1986 and 27 in 1987). Those 27 home runs he hit in 1987 were the most he would ever hit in one big league season.

Durham was an extremely powerful hitter who is an important part of the history of the Chicago Cubs.
