Chicago Bears 2017 mock draft: Four-round look
One of the problems with the Chicago Bears offense was the lack of touchdowns, especially in the red zone. While they ranked 15th in the NFL in total yards, the Bears offense ranked just 28th in total points scored. In red zone touchdowns, they ranked just 23rd.
Leggett can change the Bears’ luck in the red zone. He is big at 6-foot-5, 258 pounds. He provides a big target with a large catch radius. In 2016, he made 46 receptions for 736 yards and 7 touchdowns. He averaged 16.0 yards per reception.
Leggett has a great combination of size and speed. His red zone ability is invaluable. Being bigger than a safety and faster than a linebacker makes him extremely dangerous.
Once he catches a pass Leggett is dangerous. His hands are soft and dependable, so he can make all sorts of catches. Once he gets it he is off to the races. As I mentioned earlier about speed, you cannot have enough of it. Adding a speedy tight end just adds to the opposing defense’s misery.
Yes, I know that the Bears gave Dion Sims a big contract, and Zach Miller also has a nice contract. Neither one of those two are players you can reasonably expect to finish a season. They both have an extensive injury history. The tight end position is too important to depend on fragile players, so depth is mighty important. Conversely, Leggett’s youth serves him well. Eventually, he will be the number one tight end target.
Next: Bears work out Patrick Mahomes
In a draft deep in defensive players, players on offense will get lost in the shuffle. The Bears would be wise to pick up Leggett and have him help transform the offense.
