As the 2017 NFL Draft nears, the Chicago Bears will conduct private workouts with various prospects they may be interested in. One of those prospects is Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Regardless of the free agent signings of quarterbacks Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez, the Chicago Bears will still be searching for a quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Glennon is the ultimate bridge quarterback. While $19 million guaranteed is a hefty sum for quarterback that has been a backup for the past two seasons, it is also an indicator that the Bears are not tied to him for the long-term.

As for Sanchez, the Bears did not sign the former Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback to play. By all accounts, Sanchez was signed to be the Bears’ third-string quarterback next season and serve as a mentor for the rookie quarterback that they draft.

With that in mind, expect the Bears to take a quarterback within the first 3 rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft. Furthermore, there may be a strong chance that the Bears will take a quarterback with either the No. 3 overall selection or the No. 36 overall selection.

If that is the case, a quarterback that the Bears may have their eye on is Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes recently conducted a private workout with the Bears.

Here’s the issue with Mahomes, he sounds a lot like Jay Cutler. Mahomes has a strong arm and that tends to get in trouble sometimes when he relies on it too much. The question that the Bears need to ask themselves is if they have the coaching staff that could coach the bad decisions out of Mahome’s game. Bears’ head coach John Fox is a defensive guy, so the onus of coaching up Mahomes would fall on the offensive coaching staff. Considering how Dowell Loggains struggled in his first season as the Bears’ offensive coordinator, there is not much confidence that he is capable of developing a quarterback.

The Bears will take a quarterback early in the 2017 NFL Draft but it likely won’t be Mahomes. The guess here is that the Bears are eyeing one of the big three in Clemson’s DeShaun Watson, North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky, and Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer.
