Shaq Lawson (6-foot-3, 270 pounds), DE, Clemson

The Chicago Bears are in the running for Akiem Hicks, but with the loss of Jarvis Jenkins, they will need an end on each side. Some analysts have said that the Bears were interested in Lawson before free agency started, so with the departure of Jenkins there is a bigger need at defensive end, and a higher interest in him.

I also gave consideration to Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley, but the Baltimore Ravens, fresh off extending quarterback Joe Flacco‘s contract, wants to protect him better, so they will probably take him at six.

Lawson has a good combination of speed and power, and those skills were on full display when Clemson played Notre Dame and he thoroughly dominated Stanley with seven tackles, 3.5 of them for loss.

For the 2015 season, Lawson was constantly in the opponents’ backfield. He recorded 24.5 tackles for loss and had 12.5 sacks.

Lawson has heavy hands which help him take on big offensive linemen and handle them at the point of attack. He is also athletic enough to move to either side. He uses his power and athleticism well.

Lawson is just as good against both the run and pass, and he would be a good choice for the Chicago Bears. I thought the New York Giants might have taken him at ten, but with the Olivier Vernon signing they will look elsewhere.
